Timing

The attractions of the Modern City are scattered over a large area, so it makes sense to set your itinerary according to your mood, energy levels, and the weather. It's best to focus on one area if you have just one day—to see everything, allow two or three days. It could take three hours to do justice to the Gulbenkian alone—especially if you have lunch on the premises. The palace and its gardens justify another hour easily; add another for walking (or two if you eschew any travel by taxis or metro), and perhaps another hour for shopping and a coffee break on the Avenida da Liberdade.
