Just behind the marble Panathenaic Stadium, which hosted the first Olympic Games of modern times in 1896, Pangrati is filled with concrete apartment blocks as well as such leafy squares as Platia Proskopon and Platia Varnava. Unfortunately, only a few neoclassical buildings from the turn of the 20th century survived the building boom of the 1960s. This is a safe and quiet neighborhood, with Central Athens a comfortable half-hour walk (there is also good bus service). The First Cemetery of Athens is located in Pangrati, and notable politicians and personalities in recent Greek history are buried here. The neighborhood also has a few noteworthy tavernas and restaurants.
