Kungsbacka

Kungsbacka is situated in the heart of the West Coast, just 20 minutes south of Gothenburg. With great sights, fine shopping, lovely nature and 80 km of coast with attractive beaches, Kungsbacka has something for everyone. Kungsbacka has been repeatedly recognized as Sweden's most pleasant shopping destinations. At Hede Fashion Outlet, you'll find well-known brands at bargain prices. The cosy city centre hosts a market on the first Thursday of every month. The Kungsbacka River winds through the town and flows into the fjord. Across the fjord, right by the sea, lies Tjolöholm Castle, Sweden's only Tudor-style castle.

The City

The old wooden houses are a prominent feature of Kungsbacka's city centre. No wonder! The town was founded way back in the early 1500s. The centuries’ long border wars between Denmark and Sweden have played a significant role in the dramatic history of this part of Sweden. During the Middle Ages, Kungsbacka — situated between two rivers — was surrounded by a deep moat that protected it from attacks. In 1645, after many years of war, Halland became part of Sweden. In 1846, nearly the entire town was wiped out in a devastating fire. Only two buildings from before the fire remain today — Röda stugan and the Mayor's Residence (Borgmästarbostaden). The town was rebuilt, and the architecture from the turn of the last century blend with today's restaurants, cafés, shops and parks. The first markets held at the central square date back to medieval times, and this tradition continues today with a monthly market on the first Thursday of each month (except for bank holidays), year-round. Today, Kungsbacka is one of West Sweden's key shopping centres, with Kungsmässan and Hede Fashion Outlet drawing in the crowds and crowns. The city also has a reputation as a centre of entrepreneurship, with over 10,000 companies registered in the municipality.
