As you tour the site, learn about the city’s 2,200-year-old history, during which time it functioned as a trading link between the Caribbean coastline and the interior Maya centers during the Classic Mayan period. It’s also here that Belize’s famous Jade Head was discovered.
The jade carving depicts the Maya sun god, “Kinich Ahau,” and weighs nearly 10 pounds. Its likeness is found on all Belizean currencies. The jade from which it was carved was from ancient mines along the Motagua River valley in eastern Guatemala.
