Chilkoot Wilderness And Wildlife Viewing From Haines

Chilkoot Wilderness and Wildlife Viewing from Haines

Join your naturalist guide for an intimate small-group driving tour, limited to a maximum of 14 guests, to explore the picturesque and wildlife-abundant Chilkoot Lake State Park. This park boasts a stunning combination of elements- from a turquoise lake embraced by snow-capped mountain peaks to a river brimming with salmon that merges into the sea, all complemented by significant Tlingit cultural sites. Depending on the season, you may have the chance to spot bald eagles, harbor seals, and brown bears in this captivating locale.

Upon arriving in Haines, rendezvous with your guide and board a comfortable vehicle for a scenic half-hour drive to Chilkoot Lake State Park. If your visit falls in May, June, or July, relish the sight of wildflowers in full bloom, while eagles diligently attend to their young in nests. Transitioning into late July, witness the river teem with migrating salmon, drawing harbor seals upstream for spawning. As the salmon numbers increase, so does the likelihood of spotting bears along the river, particularly from early August through late September. Your guide, well-versed in optimal scenic stops and safe wildlife viewing locations, ensures a memorable experience. Additional binoculars are provided for your convenience throughout the tour.

In the event of wildlife sightings, the guide will look for a safe location to stop the vehicle and set up a powerful spotting scope for everyone to use. During these encounters, the guide takes the opportunity to explain the behavior of the animal, prioritizing the safety of all participants. While the area boasts scenic and pristine nature, it’s essential to note that wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, emphasizing the unpredictable and natural aspect of the surroundings. Even if wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, your guide remains committed to enhancing your experience. Your guide will assist in identifying the vegetation and flowers, discuss the area’s Ice Age geology, and explain the interconnectedness within the Chilkoot’s rainforest ecosystem. This ensures a comprehensive understanding of the natural environment, offering valuable insights regardless of wildlife encounters.

Don’t forget to bring your camera to seize the multitude of photo opportunities during the tour.

Please Note: Brown bear sightings are not expected before the salmon run begins in August. While this tour goes through prime wildlife habitat, it’s important to note that wildlife sightings, including brown bears, cannot be guaranteed.
