Classic Lisbon Half-Day Tour

Discover this magnificent city through its history and traditions as you visit the Monuments of the Portuguese Discoveries, drive through the most historic parts of the city, and visit the city museum.

You will first travel to the Belem, quarter where you will find many beautiful monuments from the 15th and 16th centuries. A brief photo stop will be made outside the Belem Tower, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which marks the point of departure of some of the Portuguese maritime explorations. You will also see the nearby Monument to the Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos), built to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the ‘death’ of Prince Henry the Navigator.

Next, you will have time to visit the Church of S. Jerome Monastery, another UNESCO World Heritage site and a masterpiece of the Manueline style of architecture. You will then visit the Visit to Palacio da Ajuda, constructed to house the Royal family after the 1755 earthquake and tsunami. The palace finally became a permanent residence of the royal family during the reign of King Luis I and his wife, Maria Pia of Savoy. Most of the palace interiors were designed during King Luis I’s reign by his wife, Queen Maria Pia and Possidonio da Silva, their architect.

After your guided tour enjoy some free time at Restauradores or Marques de Pombal to make the route of Alfama using the New Digital Walking tour. The Digital Walking tour allows guest to visit areas such as Alfama and Baixa-Chiado, areas that are closed due to heavy vehicles. An interactive guide that is activated via GPS, with audio playback and allows guests the freedom/opportunity to choose the route at their own pace.

Please Note: This tour ends at the Alfama quarter which is 10 minutes from the cruise ship pier for guests who would like to further explore the old town. For the Digital Walking Tour guests must download the “Vox City” APP for free through a QR code available on their ticket. The remaining instructions are given directly to customers through the distribution of an information flyer at time of their check-in. All tours are operated in three languages: English, Portuguese, and Spanish (daily). During the high season April 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024, German is available on Tuesdays and Fridays, French is available on Monday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and Italian is available on Wednesdays.

On Wednesdays the visit to Palacio da Ajuda will be replaced with a visit to the Royal Treasure Museum.

Day 1 Lisbon, the enchanting capital of Portugal, entices sightseers with its vibrant color, stunning Gothic architecture, and temperate weather. Easily traversed by foot or tram, the city’s distinct quarters and vivid cultural landmarks make Lisbon an excellent spot for exploration.

The Alfama district’s notable red roofs beckon you. Its cobblestoned roads lead to the Castelo de São Jorge, once a Roman and Moorish stronghold, as well as a number of charming cafés and clubs. Alfama’s Museo do Fado offers fascinating exhibitions on the Fado genre of Portuguese music, whose melodic sounds can be heard throughout the neighborhood. A trek northeast of the Alfama district will bring you to the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, a museum displaying the intricate and colorful Portuguese tiles that line the city’s buildings. Be sure to venture south of Alfama to the central Baixa district, where the magnificent Rua Augusta Arch entices visitors to stroll the Praça de Comércio square.

Head to the city’s waterfront Belém neighborhood for a spectacular view of the sparkling Tagus River and incredible beaches. Lisbon's two UNESCO World Heritage sites are also located in the Belém district: the mighty Belém Tower and the sumptuous Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Located on the water’s edge, Belém Tower is a small castle that once welcomed Portuguese explorers. The Monastery of St. Jerome was constructed to exalt Vasco de Gama’s exploration of India. There is so much to discover in captivating Lisbon!
