Day 4

Newport, Rhode Island, is a charming coastal city steeped in history and elegance. Often referred to as the "Sailing Capital of the World," Newport offers stunning seaside views, rich colonial heritage, and Gilded Age grandeur. Stroll along the famous Cliff Walk, a 3.5-mile path that weaves between the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the opulent Newport mansions on the other. These "summer cottages," such as The Breakers and Marble House, were built by American industrialist families like the Vanderbilts and Astors and serve as a testament to America's Gilded Age extravagance. Today, visitors can tour these meticulously preserved estates and marvel at their architectural splendor and lavish interiors.

Newport's historic Thames Street, lined with quaint shops, seafood restaurants, and cobblestone paths, provides a glimpse into the city’s colonial past. Newport was founded in 1639 and quickly became a significant trading port. Its history can be explored further at the Newport Historical Society Museum or the Touro Synagogue, the oldest synagogue in the United States, built in 1763. For those interested in military history, the nearby Fort Adams State Park offers guided tours of one of America's largest coastal fortresses, along with panoramic views of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.

For maritime enthusiasts, Newport's allure is unparalleled. The city has hosted America's Cup, the renowned yacht race, for over 50 years. The Newport Yacht Club and the International Yacht Restoration School provide a fascinating look into this enduring tradition. During the summer months, visitors can experience the excitement of Newport Harbor on a sailing cruise or explore the annual Newport Jazz Festival and Newport Folk Festival, both of which attract top global artists and music lovers from around the world.

Fun fact: Newport is home to one of the oldest continuously operating taverns in the United States, the White Horse Tavern. Opened in 1673, this historic landmark has served meals to countless guests over the centuries, including George Washington himself! Today, the White Horse Tavern continues to offer New England classics in a setting that feels like a step back in time.

Day 5

Middletown, Delaware, offers a delightful blend of small-town charm and modern appeal, making it an increasingly popular destination for visitors. Nestled in the heart of New Castle County, Middletown is known for its picturesque landscapes and rich history. The town has grown rapidly in recent years, but it has retained its historic character, with spots like the Everett Theatre, which first opened in 1922, offering a nostalgic glimpse into Middletown's past. Catch a local performance at this beautifully restored venue, where the arts come alive in a community setting.

Nature enthusiasts will love Middletown's proximity to the Augustine Wildlife Area, a haven for bird watchers and outdoor lovers. Spanning over 3,100 acres, this nature preserve is a great place to explore Delaware's marshlands and woodlands, offering trails and opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. For family-friendly outdoor fun, the Levels Road Dog Park and Middletown Park offer plenty of green space, walking paths, and picnic areas, perfect for a leisurely afternoon.

Middletown's vibrant dining scene is another highlight, offering everything from farm-to-table eateries to international cuisine. Local favorites like The Crooked Hammock Brewery serve up craft beers and casual bites in a laid-back atmosphere, while other restaurants highlight the town’s growing culinary diversity. The annual Middletown Peach Festival, held every August, is a major draw for both locals and tourists, featuring live entertainment, craft vendors, and delicious peach-inspired treats.

Fun fact: Middletown has been a filming location for movies, including Dead Poets Society starring Robin Williams. Its quaint downtown and historic buildings made it the perfect backdrop for scenes set in a classic New England town. Whether you're a fan of the outdoors, local arts, or unique dining, Middletown offers a welcoming, leisurely escape just minutes from bustling urban areas.

Day 6 Plymouth is a town in southeastern Massachusetts, on Plymouth Bay, about 55 km (34 mi) southeast of Boston. The seat of Plymouth County, it was the site of the first permanent European settlement in New England; it is now a fishing and tourist center with ship-related industries and cranberry-packing houses. Plymouth Rock, a tourist attraction, is on the shore under a granite canopy; recreations of Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower are also there. The pilgrims founded Plymouth on Dec. 21, 1620, establishing a settlement that became the seat of Plymouth Colony in 1633 and a part of Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1691.

Day 7 Evidence of our nation's birth abounds in Boston, a hub of revolution that is essentially the oldest city in the United States. Visitors are compelled to walk the 2.5-mile Freedom Trail around the city center, and bear witness to 16 historical locations related to the history of America.

Art, music and theater devotees will find much to embrace here, while sports fans have their choice of baseball (see the Red Sox at Fenway), basketball (Celtics), football (Patriots) and hockey (Bruins). And hey, everyone must eat, so don't miss the universally praised local seafood, from clam chowder to lobster.

Nearly 20 million people visit Boston annually, where they'll walk the Freedom Trail, visit "cradle of liberty" Faneuil Hall, view the collections at the Museum of Fine Arts, and ride a Swan Boat on the lake at Boston Common.

Day 9 Ogunquit - A beautiful place by the sea. Offering quaint New England flavor of the Village Center, Ogunquit is a bustling holiday haven to visitors from all over the world. Ogunquit today remains a tranquil, small village that continues to offer almost everything to almost everyone as perhaps nowhere else in the country can.

Its countless variety of fine shops; excellent restaurants and lodgings; art galleries and museums; the Playhouse and summer repertory theatres; nearby golf courses and country clubs; fishing, lobstering and sight-seeing cruises, and spectacular views year 'round would be difficult to encounter anywhere else.

For the past 100 years, this charming seaside village has evolved from a small fishing hamlet with dirt roads and shacks, to a major vacation resort without losing its charm or magnetism. This little "gem" on the rocky coast of Maine should not be missed.
