Half Day Tour To Fatima

Half Day Tour to Fatima

See the holy site of Fatima on this enriching half-day tour from Lisbon. Leaving Lisbon, you’ll head north to tour Fatima, approximately 75 miles away.

The history of Fatima centers around three children- Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta- who witnessed an apparition of a lady dressed in white while guarding their sheep. She visited the children on the 13th of each month from May until October. The last apparition was witnessed by 70,000 pilgrims, who saw the Miracle of the Sun. Our Lady of Fatima sent a message that consisted of three secrets: first, a vision of Hell, where the souls of the sinful would travel without prayer; the second, prophesied the beginning of the Second World War; and a mysterious third secret, which is held by the Vatican.

The faithful began to make pilgrimages to the site, and in 1918, with public donations, a small chapel was built. Over the years, the church has grown to its present size.

Your first point of visit is the Sanctuary, the location of the Basilica with the tombs of Jacinta, Francisco, and Lucia, the Chapel of Apparitions, the heart of the Sanctuary, and the new Church of the Holy Trinity, the fourth largest in the world by capacity.

You will be given a guided tour, followed by free time to explore or possibly attend part of a mass, if one is going on. At the appointed time, you will meet your transportation back to Lisbon.

Please Note: All tours are operated in three languages: English, Portuguese, and Spanish (daily). During the high season April 1, 2024 through October 31, 2024, Italian is available on Wednesdays.

Day 1 Lisbon, the enchanting capital of Portugal, entices sightseers with its vibrant color, stunning Gothic architecture, and temperate weather. Easily traversed by foot or tram, the city’s distinct quarters and vivid cultural landmarks make Lisbon an excellent spot for exploration.

The Alfama district’s notable red roofs beckon you. Its cobblestoned roads lead to the Castelo de São Jorge, once a Roman and Moorish stronghold, as well as a number of charming cafés and clubs. Alfama’s Museo do Fado offers fascinating exhibitions on the Fado genre of Portuguese music, whose melodic sounds can be heard throughout the neighborhood. A trek northeast of the Alfama district will bring you to the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, a museum displaying the intricate and colorful Portuguese tiles that line the city’s buildings. Be sure to venture south of Alfama to the central Baixa district, where the magnificent Rua Augusta Arch entices visitors to stroll the Praça de Comércio square.

Head to the city’s waterfront Belém neighborhood for a spectacular view of the sparkling Tagus River and incredible beaches. Lisbon's two UNESCO World Heritage sites are also located in the Belém district: the mighty Belém Tower and the sumptuous Mosteiro dos Jerónimos. Located on the water’s edge, Belém Tower is a small castle that once welcomed Portuguese explorers. The Monastery of St. Jerome was constructed to exalt Vasco de Gama’s exploration of India. There is so much to discover in captivating Lisbon!
