Lighthouse, Totems And Eagles Cruise

Ketchikan Lighthouse, Totems & Eagles Excursion

Keep your camera within easy reach, because photo opportunities abound on this seafaring Ketchikan shore excursion, which features guaranteed eagles, multiple eagle nests, Totem Bight State Park, Vallenar Rocks Wildlife Viewing Area, and the historic Guard Island Lighthouse.

Meet your Alaskan captain and their crew at their private Ward Cove dock and board your vessel. You’re free to relax in the heated main cabin or enjoy the open-air observation deck, as you witness an abundance of eagles with binoculars provided to you. You will see multiple eagle nests and baby eagles in the season. Harbor seals, pigeon guillemots, and moon jellyfish are commonly spotted as well. Whales, deer, blue herons, and a variety of seabirds are seen throughout the entire season. Along the way, you’ll hear of the area’s maritime history, the rich Tlingit & Haida Alaska Native cultures, the timber and fishing industries, and local lifestyles.

You’ll observe harvested and old-growth areas of the Tongass National Forest, and travel past historic Ward Cove Cannery. On clear days, you’ll circumnavigate the Guard Island Lighthouse established in 1901. No other Ketchikan cruise excursion offers this itinerary, nor offers a view & sights of Totem Bight State Park from the water. You’ll view a beautiful collection of 14 towering Tlingit & Haida totem poles and the Totem Bight clan house. As you travel past the park, you’ll see colorful cabins, mansions of the local rich and famous, and unique homes, many built on their own islands. Your deckhands are pleased to take your picture in front of the totem park, or lighthouse or posing with your captain for a memorable photo in the wheelhouse.

Your captain will unravel the historic mysteries of Alaska’s most dangerous island, Danger Island, as you traverse the waters along the Sarah Palin-famed “Bridge to Nowhere” Island. You will circumnavigate or have a clear view of a total of 12 islands on your tour route. Many of these islands are inhabited only by Alaska’s wildlife.

Enjoy Alaska’s most scrumptious hot chocolate, coffee, tea, water, or your favorite soft drinks, along with salmon spread, crackers, alder-smoked salmon, bull kelp pickles, and artisanal chocolate. These are all complimentary, provided by table service, and will make for a delightful treat as you take in the breathtaking seascape and professional narration. Your Ketchikan excursion boat accommodates around 35 guests, complete with onboard restrooms and gifts for sale.

Day 1 A favorite for many cruise-goers and tourists, Ketchikan, Alaska, is a charming city located near the state’s southeastern edge. A well-traveled fishing destination first used by Alaska natives, including the Haida, Tlingit, and Tsimshian peoples, Ketchikan became an important commercial hub for international fishing operations in the nineteenth century. The city has embraced its nickname, “The Salmon Capital of the World,” and remains a popular site for commercial and sport fishing alike.

A plethora of totem poles, crafted by Native Alaskans, have been preserved by the city and comprise the largest collection of totem poles in Alaska. Visitors will spot totem poles while exploring the city’s waterfront and main streets, but most are housed in Saxman Village or the Totem Heritage Center. Shopping, culture, and history abound in downtown Ketchikan, where art galleries, seafood restaurants, and the historic Creek Street are merely a short walk away.

Nature lovers will delight in the abundant natural areas that surround the city. A quick boat ride or flight provides stunning views of the alluring and majestic beauty of the Misty Fjords National Monument. The nearby Tongass National Forest boasts spectacular wildlife, which can be seen on hikes through Eagle Creek and the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary. Those who seek adventure can zip-line, snorkel, or go off-roading in an all-terrain vehicle, all amidst the natural splendor of Alaska’s lush forests. The possibilities in Ketchikan are endless!
