Private Pompeii, Sorrento & Positano

Private Pompeii, Sorrento & Positano

Leaving from the Amalfi Ferry Pier bright and early, this private tour will take you on a nine hour exploration of Pompeii, Sorrento, and Positano. A private driver will make this the easiest tour you can imagine.

The almost 2000 year old ruins of the city of Pompeii were excavated in the 18th century and remain wonderfully preserved to this day. Wander the ancient roads and alleys and peer through time into the windows of temples and villas of the ancient city. The bones of this once glorious city are still colorful with frescoed walls, mosaics, and even ancient graffiti, though some is still buried by the volcanic ash from the eruption in 79 AD.

After exploring the ancient ruins, you will move on to Sorrento to tour one of the jewels of the Amalfi Coast. Feast your eyes on the lush views of olive groves and vineyards, and smell the fragrant lemon and grapefruit trees that pepper the gardens tucked into the terraces of this uniquely beautiful town.

From there you’ll head to Positano, the postcard-pretty town that rises along the cliffside, where houses are stacked like sun-bleached jewels above the stunning blue of the coastline. Sample local cuisine during lunch in Montepertuso, an enchanting hamlet that has a hilltop view from Praiano to Capri, the home of Mount Gambera where legend has it the Virgin Mary battled the Devil, leaving evidence in the scars and holes in the rocky mountain.

Lightweight summer clothing and light layers are recommended, with sweaters and jackets advised for evenings and cooler months. Some terrain in Italy is uneven, and archaeological sites can be challenging for those who are not surefooted, so keep that in mind when booking your tour. Vehicles are accessible for a foldable wheelchair or walker.

Bookings for this tour are available from March to November, with each tour lasting nine hours. Private tours for small and large groups are both available, using either luxurious Mercedes sedans or Mercedes vans. Whether it’s a family vacation or a large group, party, or wedding excursion, expert local drivers will privately chauffeur you through Italy.

Please Note: This tour includes an English-speaking driver, fuel, highway toll fees, and parking fees, but does not include entrance fees or tickets to local attractions, or private guides. Though your English-speaking driver can provide commentary while driving you around, they cannot act as a guide outside of the car. Food and beverages are not included in this tour, though there are times set aside for snack breaks and meals included in the day’s schedule. The driver will be happy to make suggestions about the best places to eat throughout the day. At the end of this history-steeped tour, your driver will return you to the Amalfi Ferry Pier.

Day 1

Amalfi, Italy, is a gem nestled along the world-famous Amalfi Coast, where dramatic cliffs meet the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. This enchanting town, once a powerful maritime republic, is now a beloved destination for those seeking a blend of history, culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. The heart of Amalfi is its bustling Piazza del Duomo, dominated by the stunning Amalfi Cathedral. With its striking Arab-Norman architecture, bronze doors from Constantinople, and beautifully ornate interior, this 9th-century cathedral is a must-visit for anyone intrigued by Italy's rich historical tapestry. Climbing the 62 steps to the cathedral’s entrance rewards visitors with a commanding view of the lively square below, filled with quaint cafes, boutique shops, and the joyful hum of daily life.

Just steps away from the cathedral lies the Chiostro del Paradiso, a peaceful cloister dating back to the 13th century that showcases Moorish-influenced architecture and houses the tombs of Amalfi’s nobility. The adjacent Museo della Carta offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s history as a medieval center of papermaking, where visitors can witness traditional techniques still in practice today. Wandering through Amalfi's labyrinthine streets reveals charming piazzas, vibrant ceramics shops, and delightful spots serving limoncello, the zesty lemon liqueur made from locally grown lemons. For those with a sweet tooth, indulging in a delicious sfogliatella, a shell-shaped pastry filled with ricotta and citrus, is a must.

Amalfi also serves as a gateway to the natural wonders of the Amalfi Coast. The Valle delle Ferriere is a serene nature reserve just a short hike from the town center, where visitors can escape the crowds and immerse themselves in lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and ancient ruins. The valley is named after its historic ironworks, some of which still stand today. For those who prefer the sea, Amalfi’s pebble beaches, such as Marina Grande, offer the perfect spot to bask in the sun or take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters. Boat tours along the coast provide a unique perspective of the region’s dramatic cliffs and hidden coves, including the famed Emerald Grotto, known for its dazzling green waters.

Fun fact: Amalfi was one of the four great maritime republics of Italy, alongside Venice, Pisa, and Genoa. During its peak in the 10th and 11th centuries, Amalfi established the Amalfi Tables, the earliest known maritime code that governed the Mediterranean Sea. These regulations were so influential that they remained in effect until 1570, demonstrating Amalfi’s historical significance as a formidable maritime power. Today, this legacy lives on, not only in its historical sites but also in the town’s enduring spirit of adventure and discovery.
