Sigtuna And Wenngarn Castle
After arriving in Stockholm you will certainly be looking for some true history and culture. Your journey will take you first to the charming Sigtuna, Sweden’s oldest town dating to 970 A.D. Upon arrival your local, knowledgeable guide will take you and your small group on a walking tour along the very streets that Vikings traversed over 1,000 years ago as you learn about the Vikings and their storied history. While here you will see two 300-year old houses and enter St. Mary’s 13th century Gothic church with its beautiful paintings, statues and triptychs.
Afterward, take a short ride to Wenngarn Castle, a stately residence of the noble family De la Gardie, one of the richest families in 17th Century Sweden, before being confiscated during the Reduction of Charles XI. In modern times it has served as a rehabilitation and health center. You will also visit a unique 17th century Baroque church.
Just outside of Sigtuna is Viby village, a well preserved farm town known for its red cabins that appear as they did in the 1850s. Take the opportunity to experience a sneak peek into a typical old peasant society before your return to port.
