Mackay is still a relatively relaxed and small city. However, with its premium location on the Pioneer River and by the Coral Sea, it has slowly started gaining a reputation as a party city at night. Each Thursday the local newspaper 'The Daily Mercury' prints a list of the bands that are playing and where.
