Bishop Auckland is renowned not just for Auckland Castle but also for its multitude of shopping options in quaint boutiques and specialist shops in the city centre. With over 200 unique shops that offer items not typically found on high streets, Fore Bondgate (one of the oldest streets in town) is a shopping haven.

Despite its compactness, Durham offers a wide range of shopping options amongst the intimate lanes and atmospheric narrow streets, much of which is closed to traffic, making for a pleasant and relaxed experience. Its monthly farmers' market adds additional colour and life on selected days throughout the week, while Prince Bishops Place offers all the high street and designer brands one could wish for. Unique to the city is the Fowler’s Yards, where artists and craftspeople create and sell their specialities such as glass, metal and textile work. There is even a microbrewery.
