Powell's City of Books

Powell's City of Books is so humongous you'll need a map to get around – luckily, you can pick one up inside free of charge. Spanning an entire city block, Powell's is something of an institution, a complex that not only packs a near-million new, used, and rare tomes but also contains a café (although where in Portland doesn't?) and curiosities like the Espresso Book Machine, where anyone can make their dream of being a published writer come true by printing a hard-cover copy of their work in just a few minutes.

Shopping

There are multiple shopping districts in Portland, and given the absence of a sales tax, the city is a prime shopping destination. Northeast Alberta Street offers a variety of locally made and vintage items, while Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard is home to one of the largest independent bookstores, Powell's City of Books. For upscale and high-end shopping, head to the Pearl District. Additionally, malls and shopping centers like Pioneer Place cater to a range of budgets.
